Have you ever wondered what it means to be a medical anthropologist, what they study and how it pertains to every day culture and living? Within this website you will find the answers to those questions along with examples of both applied and critical anthropology. Anne Fadiman's book "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down" will also be discussed throughout this website. The book offers many good examples of cultural competence and incompetence. It also provides examples of applied and critical anthropology.
Culture is a profound part of our everyday lives, especially living in the 21st century. This was not the case merely 30 years ago. 30 years ago people did not have respect for people of different cultures. It was hard for immigrants who came to America because very few people took the time to understand the rituals and ceremonies that followed them here. Cultural competency is an important part of life. In order to have a good understanding of the different people who live in America, even around the world, one must be willing to put their own feelings, beliefs and biases aside to be willing to learn the ways of other people. Being culturally competent increases one knowledge but also gains them respect among their peers.
Overall the goal of this website is to increase the readers knowledge about two fields on anthropology, cultural competency, and the Hmong culture. Even though the Hmong are not the only cultural group in America nor are they the only ones who use a shaman for healing purposes but knowing more about at least one culture can help to open the eyes of many to the diversity of life around the world.
